The 'Ah Ha!' Moment: When Possible, Answering the Currently Unanswerable using Focused Reasoning

چکیده
Focused reasoning is a method for continuing a specific inference task as soon as rules or facts which may assist in the reasoning are added to the knowledge base without repeating completed inference, re-posing queries, or performing unnecessary inference. Determining if focused reasoning should commence uses very few computational resources above those used normally to add a term to a knowledge base. We have developed three focused reasoning procedures – backward-inforward, forward, and forward-in-backward – built upon Inference Graphs, a graph-based concurrent reasoning mechanism.

Knowledge and Reasoning for Answering Questions
Research has shown that answers do not exist in biomedical corpora for many questions posed by physicians. We have therefore developed a question filtering component that determines whether or not a posed question is answerable. Using 200 clinical questions that have been annotated by physicians to be answerable or unanswerable, we have explored the use of supervised machine-learning algorithms...

An “ah ha” moment. For a foreigner attempting to participate in and understand the lives of people very different from herself, it was usually far easier to accomplish the former than the latter. And while anthropological training had prepared me to quickly recognize specific configurations of social relationships that differed from those to which I was accustomed, there were few moments in the...
متن کاملOntology-based Query Answering with PAGOdA
We describe PAGOdA: a highly optimised ‘pay-as-you-go’ reasoning system that supports conjunctive query (CQ) answering with respect to an arbitrary OWL 2 ontology and an RDF dataset. PAGOdA uses a novel hybrid approach to query answering that combines a datalog reasoner (currently RDFox [10]) with a fullyfledged OWL 2 reasoner (currently HermiT [5]) to provide scalable performance while still g...
متن کاملPAGOdA: Pay-as-you-go ABox Reasoning
Ontologies are increasingly used to provide structure and enhance access to large datasets. In such applications the ontology can be seen as a TBox, and the dataset as an ABox, with the key reasoning problem being conjunctive query (CQ) answering. Unfortunately, for OWL 2 this problem is known to be of high worst case complexity, even when complexity is measured with respect to the size of the ...
